The Nokaoi (no ka oi) Boat website allows us to bring together in one place all the many facets of boat building and other similar fiberglass projects currently being worked on.
The experience I received at a very young age working at the family boat yard in Hawaii and then later commercial diving and fishing has made me very familiar with many variations of hulls, engines and equipment.
This also set the direction of my life, involving me with every area of boating.
Several years ago I used this experience to create the Nokaoi line of boats, which I consider to be the ultimate 20-26 foot fishing and diving boat. When I set out to create my own design, I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve – a fast, light and strong boat.
In my opinion, the popularity of the Nokaoi boat over the years validates my original design and my desire to incorporate features that would make it truly a very versatile small craft fishing platform. Over the years I have also modified the cab and other items as requested by customers to provide various new features.
The Nokaoi prototype was designed in 1972 and production started in Maui in 1973. It was primarily designed for fishing and diving. It is very economical; the 20’ version offers 50 mph with 115hp outboard. The Nokaoi line now has several configurations including: 20’ & 26’ Nokaoi, 30’ Ed Monk Innovator design, 24’ & 30’ Landing Craft, and a 28’ Orca Work Boat. Currently, All boats are available in California, and are built to order specifications.
I also create and maintain a line of 14’ dual hull Dual Hull Kayaks called Catayak, designed for use in harbors, open ocean and lakes. They can be used for rowing diving, fishing, stand up paddle, sailing, and also configured with an outboard with or without tandem seating. They’re easily transported to lake or ocean, and the dual hull makes it a very stable platform for a variety of recreational uses.
Other projects included creating an extremely fast racing boat with our newly invented turbine outboard using aviation jet fuel or diesel, which allows more power and better economy.
My extensive knowledge and experience with fiberglass molding has also led me to design and create a mock-up for a fiberglass or polyurethane modular structure built out of compound curved and flat panels that’s easily transported in a truck, trailer or military cargo plane to disaster areas. After transport to site, a 30’ x 60’ building can be erected by 2 people in 4-6 hours. Additional panels can be inserted to increase width or length, either initially or later to expand to space needed.
While being transported, these panels are stacked one on another, allowing an efficient and tightly compacted transport regime. On-site, they are placed one next to another and bolted together. The design allows temporary or permanent placement. To move the modular building, unbolt the panels and transport by truck, trailer or air. Permanent placement can be achieved by providing a concrete slab. Panels with windows and doors are placed where needed. Hallways can connect domes together in any configuration.
These units provide a quick answer to on-site housing requirements for relief workers needing shelter for living, storage, medical facilities and other on-site logistics.
These can also provide other types of temporary shelter, replacing tents for parking lot sales, weddings, corporate and sporting events, and other outdoor activities needing shelter from weather, either temporarily or permanently.
Optional configurations are available, based on use and weather conditions. Light weight for portable and rental, Medium weight for homes and buildings, Heavy weight for hurricane, typhoon and cyclone prone environments.
